Japan PS3 Sales see Threefold Increase in December

Final Fantasy XIII proved to be a much needed system seller for the PS3 in Japan, as the game, as well as the PS3 price cut and redesign, helped Sony increase their sales for the console threefold.

Sony sold 496,598 PlayStation 3s this December in Japan, up from 141,731 units in the previous year according to Enterbrain. This represents a 350% year-over-year increase in sales.

Enterbrain President, Hirokazu Hamamura, estimated that Final Fantasy XIII would help the PS3 shift 500,000 units in an interview in early September. In addition to this, Media Create suggested that the PS3 may be able to hit the 4.5 million mark by the end of the calendar year, after just recently surpassing the 4 million mark two weeks ago.
