Sega teases a new 2D HD Sonic title

It just turned midnight here on the east coast, meaning it's now the official 10th anniversary of the Sega Dreamcast. Launching on 09/09/99, the Sega Dreamcast dashed it's way into the hearts of many gamers before Sega pulled out of the hardware manufacturing business a scant 2 years later.

And what better way of commemorating it than with the announcement of a new Sonic game? Codenamed Project Needlemouse, Sonic returns to his two dimensional ways in his latest game. Due sometime in 2010 for currently unannounced platforms, the game is described as a re-invention of the franchise and is a response to those disappointed with the current Sonic franchise. The game will be in 2D with full high definition graphics, which would seem to indicate that the game could be slated for a PS3/360/PC release.

Of course, every time Sega's made a new Sonic game, they've always promised a return to the roots before they bash us in the head with stupid new Sonic friends and gimmicky game elements. But still, maybe it's just because it's the anniversary of the Dreamcast and arguably the last good Sonic game, but I'm optimistic.
