Japan held to a draw by UAE
Japan were held to a 1-1 draw by the United Arab Emirates in a Kirin Challenge Cup friendly match on Thursday night at Niigata Tohoku Denryoku Big Swan Stadium.
Substitute midfielder Shinji Kagawa’s strike in the 72nd minute was cancelled out five minutes later out by a fine individual goal by Emirates forward Ismail Alhammadi, also a second-half substitute.
Preparing for next week’s World Cup qualifier, Japan coach Takeshi Okada gave a number of young and untried players a run-out to assess their skills and abilities, combining them with experienced midfielders Junichi Inamoto of Frankfurt, Makoto Hasebe of VfL Wolfsburg and Shunsuke Nakamura of Celtic.
With the Emirates playing defensively, Japan attacked hard from the beginning and had 15 attempts on goal to the visitors’ four.
Kashima Antlers right-back Atsuto Uchida hit a shot high from 20 meters out in the 13th minute, Shimizu S-Pulse forward Shinji Okazaki struck from close range a minute later, Kawasaki Frontale defender Shuhei Terada headed a Nakamura free-kick slightly wide in the 26th minute, and a mid-range shot from Inamoto in the 37th minute also missed the target. Four minutes later, Nagoya Grampus forward Keiji Tamada forced UAE goalkeeper Majed Naser to punch out his powerful shot.
Japan’s attacking domination continued after the break and Nakamura threatened the Emirates goal with a 20-meter free-kick two minutes into the second half, but Naser was able to get a hand to it.
Seven minutes later, the unmarked Okubo missed an “open” goal after being set up by Tamada, to the disappointment of the 31,853 spectators.
Kagawa came off the bench in the 71st minute and broke the deadlock for the hosts a minute later.
After Kashima Antlers forward Shinzo Koroki, also a substitute, hit the post with a header, Uchida picked up the rebound and fed Kagawa, who slotted the ball home.
Kagawa, at the age of 19 years and 206 days, became the third-youngest goal-scorer for Japan.
But the Emirates, preparing for a World Cup qualifying game against Korea Republic under new French boss Dominique Bathenay, equalized through Alhammadi on a counterattack. The Alo Ali forward, who came on in the 74th minute, dribbled up the left flank in the 77th minute, cut inside to beat Yuji Nakazawa and fired in from the edge of the box.
Japan could have broken the tie in the last 10 minutes with big scoring chances for Kagawa in the 82nd and 88th minutes and Koroki shortly before the final whistle, but the youngsters lacked a good finishing touch.
Okada said, “It is a pity we couldn’t win. After 10 minutes, we lost our movement up front, but we fixed this in the second half and produced the goal. But we couldn’t score a second and that is a big problem.”
“The new players showed the good parts of their game. Now, all I need to do is to get them to combine well with the rest of the team.”
The Japanese coach added, “We’ll use what we’ve learned from today’s game against Uzbekistan next week.”
Bathenay commented, “It was a difficult game for us as Japan took control of the game well. We couldn’t do as much as we wanted but learned a lot from the game. But we produced a goal on a small chance, and that’s a part of football.”
Japan, currently placed second in their group in the World Cup final round qualifiers behind Qatar, will play Uzbekistan on October 15 at Saitama Stadium.
